A virtual hiking map for Jezero Crater, the landing site of the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover

Future Mars explorers can now hike around the landing site of NASA’s Mars 2020 Perseverance rover with an interactive map loaded with orbital images, terrain data, and synthetic and real-world 3D panoramic views of the crater Jezero and its surroundings. The map, accessible via a normal web browser, was presented today at the Europlanet Scientific Congress (EPSC) 2022 in Granada, Spain, by Sebastian Walter of the Freie Universität Berlin.

“The map is the perfect tool for planning a future visit to Mars, with an interactive interface where you can choose from different baseline datasets available. Some of the slopes are quite steep, so pay attention to those if you want avoid too much oxygen consumption!” says Sebastien Walter.

“To get a real idea of ​​what to expect on your future trip to Mars, you can click on one of the waypoint marker symbols to either enter a full screen 3D view or, if you have a virtual reality setup, to enter a fully immersive environment. You can even listen to the sounds of the rover if you’re standing nearby, but please don’t touch it or you’ll contaminate the probes.”

The map allows virtual hikers to zoom in and out and quickly cycle through scenes, so they can explore the large-scale landscape down to centimeter detail. Some of the 360° panoramas integrated into the waypoints have been rendered synthetically from orbital image data.

Others are actual panoramas stitched together from a host of unique images taken by the Mastcam-Z camera instrument aboard the Mars 2020 Rover Perseverance, which were provided by the University of Arizona. The sounds were recorded by the SuperCam instrument during this same rover mission.

The base layer of the map is a merged dataset derived from three different instruments currently orbiting Mars: the HRSC on Mars Express and the Contextual Camera (CTX) and Imaging Science Experiment instruments at high resolution (HiRISE) on Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO). HiRISE data was provided by the Terrain Relative Navigation (TRN) team at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).

The Jezero map is based on the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) instrument data portal of ESA’s Mars Express mission, which provides tools to visualize and disseminate large amounts of images of Mars and Mars. field data in an online environment.

“Initially, we created the Jezero Map as an outreach app to complement the HRSC Mapserver tool, which helps professional scientists explore the Martian surface,” said Sebastian Walter. “But as the rover sends back more and more high-resolution image data and even audio recordings, it is proving to be the perfect tool for immersive visualization of this data in a scientific context in itself.”
